Faculty Statement from Concordia’s Geography, Planning & Environment Department

The following is a statement from faculty members in Concordia’s Geography, Planning & Environment, updated as of 12am, Tuesday, March 13th.

Statement on the Strike
 (French to follow…)

These are challenging times for all at Concordia University. The student strike to keep
education accessible in the province affects faculty in many ways. Given the variety
of our research and our experiences, it seems only natural that the full and part time
professors in the Department of Geography Planning and Environment also have
different positions with respect to the student strike. The purpose of this letter is to affirm a commitment that we share:

In our role as teachers, we seek to inspire students and to support them as they realize
themselves as individuals and as active members of the society. In this context and
when confronted with students who are exercising their right to civil disobedience we
refuse to call security or to notify authorities who will penalize the students. Furthermore, if and as the strike continues, we will seek to accommodate the students in our classes who participate in the strike. We will accommodate these students according to our best judgment and without rancor.

Respectfully,

Respectueusement,

  1. s says:

how can someone (a faculty member) endorse this statement?

  2. jess says:

S- Unsure as to what you mean. If you yourself are a faculty member who wishes to endorse this statement, then I suggest contacting one of the undersigned faculty and they should be able to direct you to the main list.
If you are actually questioning faculty members’ ability to endorse this statement, then I suppose your question is directed towards the possible range of teachers’ discretion with their students. If you clarify what exactly you mean I will try and find a more precise response!

  3. Keara says:

So much respect for these people!
